Rifle: Memphis Tops WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team lost a Great America Rifle Conference match against Memphis, 4612-4585, on Friday, Feb. 10, at Murray, Ky., in the Mountaineers’ NCAA qualifier.
West Virginia (4-7, 1-5 GARC) shot its fourth-highest aggregate score of the season which consisted of a 2293 smallbore and a 2292 air rifle score.
The Mountaineers’ postseason fate will be determined once all NCAA teams fire at qualifying matches.
Junior Brian Launer tied a season high in the air rifle with a 581, which was good for second place behind Memphis’ Krissy Bahnsen who fired a 585. Launer paced WVU in smallbore with a 577, also a second-place score that was four points behind medalist Kate Benjamin of Memphis.
Sophomore Lafe Kunkel placed third in smallbore with a 576 and teammate Amy Smith tied for fourth with a 574.
West Virginia will compete in the GARC Championships on Feb. 25-26 at Oxford, Miss.
