CHICAGO: West Virginia University wrestler Jared Villers highlighted a weekend of wrestling for the Mountaineers by taking seventh place at the 44th annual Midlands Wrestling Championship held at Northwestern University's Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday, Dec. 30, in Chicago, Ill.
Final team standings were not available at press time and will be available later this evening or early tomorrow morning.
Villers started his day off by defeating Luther College's Alec Bonader by a 15-7 major decision in his first consolation bout after falling in the quarterfinals the previous day. The Akron, Ohio, native fell in the consolation quarterfinals to T.J. Morrison of Rider by a score of 9-8.
The loss dropped Villers to the seventh-place bout where he was able to upset No. 4 seed Nathan Moore of Purdue by a 10-4 decision.
Villers would be the only Mountaineer to place at the tournament as teammates David Jauregui (149) and Kurt Brenner (174) were upset earlier on Saturday.
