Swimming: WVU Wins Terrapin Cup Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving team dominated the competition for the third straight day and won the Terrapin Cup Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
The women had six top 10 performances and established two school records while the men won four events and set four school marks. The women finished first at the invitational with 641.50 points while the 20th-ranked men won the invitational in convincing form, finishing with 860 points -- 139 points ahead of second place North Carolina State.
The night started with two top showings in the 1650 free. Sophomore Lindsey Largo was the top finisher for the women, placing fourth with a time of 16:52.18. Freshmen Justin Galbreath earned the points for the men, finishing second with a time of 15:53.16.
Freshman Morgan Callaway had another strong showing in the 200 back, swimming to a second place finish with a time of 2:01.40. Sophomore Michael Walker broke his own school record with his second place finish in the event. His time of 1:47.94 was .63 seconds faster than his the previous record.
Freshman Kayla Andrews was the second Mountaineer of the night to break her own school record when she placed second in the 100 free with a time of 49.71. Junior Nick Delic followed with his own record-setting swim, winning the event with a time of 44.48, a WVU record. Sophomore Andrew Langenfeld was right behind Delic, finishing third at 44.64.
The 200 breast was another great event for the Mountaineers. Freshman Kitti Veisz placed second on the women’s side with a time of 2:17.22, while another freshman, Sean Mahoney, won the event for the men. His first place time of 1:58.58 was a school record. Sophomore Casey Beckwith was close behind Mahoney, finishing third with a time of 2:02.85
Junior Pablo Marmolejo earned his first individual win of the weekend with a victory in the 200 fly (1:47.11). Fellow junior Eduardo Ramirez was close behind, finishing third at 1:51.43.
Both the women and the men ended the weekend with two more relay victories. The women set a school record with their first place finish in the 400 free relay. Andres, Veisz, and freshmen Shaunna Purtell and Stephanie Shupe comprised for the winning time of 3:24.23. The men followed with their own record setting first place finish. Povazsai, Langenfeld, Delic and sophomore Tony Cisneros set a new school record with their time of 2:56.00. WVU never finished less than first in a relay throughout the invitational.
All told, the Mountaineers set 17 school records this weekend.
In addition to N.C. State, the men also outdistanced Connecticut, Yale, West Chester, William & Mary, Maryland and Drexel.
The women defeated Kansas, Maryland, Villanova, Connecticut and Richmond.
The Mountaineers have a two-week break before they hit the pool again. WVU will next host Maryland on Saturday, Dec. 2. The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m.
