MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team announced today that it has signed Bonnie West, a libero, to its squad. West will join the Mountaineers for the 2007 season.
A native of Wildomar, Calif., West brings valuable experience to the WVU team. The libero has played varsity volleyball for four years and was co-captain of her team (2005-06). West was named All-League 2004-06 and All-Valley in 2006. She also competed in the Rim of the World Tournament with her high school where they finished first and West and her team's setter were named co-MVP of the competition. Elsinore, her high school team, is also a finalist in the CIF Southern Section Division II-A playoffs. The squad is currently still competing in CIF to work towards making it to States.
West adds a great deal of club experience as well. She competed with the Rancho Valley club in California which won the Reno Festival.
West and her beach volleyball partner were AAU Junior Olympic Champions in U18 beach doubles in 2006 and Roxy/Quicksilver Champions in 2005.
The libero is excited to come to West Virginia. She feels WVU offers a great blend of academics and athletics and is looking forward to working with the Mountaineer team.
“I was also impressed with the longevity of coach [Veronica] Hammersmith and her continued love of the sport,” West said. “I feel that she can take my play to the next level. I love the team and share a common goal of dedication and commitment to be the best.”
West is not the only one excited that she signed with West Virginia. WVU coach Veronica Hammersmith feels the libero will add a lot to the Mountaineer squad.
“We’re getting a very experienced volleyball player,” Hammersmith said of signing West. “She’s played on top levels in high school and with her club. She’s a good passer and defensive player. With Aurora [Ebert-Santos] leaving, we need that. We’re very excited to get her.”
The incoming freshman also enjoys playing beach volleyball and going snowboarding. West plans to major in broadcast news.
