Women's Basketball: WVU Earns First Win

BATON ROUGE, La. – After scoring just six points in two games against LSU and Virginia Tech, junior Chakhia Cole got back on track with a team-high 21 points to lead West Virginia to an 84-61 victory over Howard in the final game of the Basketball Travelers Classic in Baton Rouge, La., Tuesday night.
Cole was 6 of 7 from the floor, 9 of 11 from the free throw line and added nine rebounds.
The Mountaineers (1-2) overcame a 41-39 halftime deficit by holding Howard scoreless for a four-minute stretch in the second half to turn a 45-44 deficit into a 53-45 lead. Howard’s Shannon Carlisle ended WVU’s run with a jumper in the paint at 12:30, and Howard got to within six, 56-50, before WVU used a 9-3 run to open up a 12-point lead.
An Olayinka Sanni basket with 4:46 left put the Mountaineers up by 20, 74-54.
Sanni contributed 18 points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds. LaQuita Owens had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Ashley Powell scored a career-high 14 points and Sparkle Davis added 11.
Davis and Owens made all six of West Virginia’s 3-point baskets; the Mountaineers 6 of 14 from 3-point range.
Carlisle led Howard (0-3) with 22 points.
WVU’s home opener is this Saturday against Wofford for a 6:30 pm game that follows the Mountaineer men’s game against Canisius set to tip off at 4 pm.
