Women's Basketball: WVU Falls to Tech

BATON ROUGE, La. – West Virginia couldn’t hang on to a 20-point first-half lead, dropping a 60-56 decision to Virginia Tech Monday evening at the Basketball Travelers Classic in Baton Rouge, La.
The Mountaineers (0-2) led 35-15 with 3:59 left in the first half following a Tameka Kelly basket and held a 12-point 40-28 lead at halftime.
The Hokies (2-1) trimmed the lead to one, 48-47, with 10:17 remaining on an Amber Hall jumper, and Tech took its first lead of the second half on a pair of free throws by Nare Diawara with 2:27 remaining. The Hokies’ remaining four points of the game came from the free throw line.
Kirby Copeland led Virginia Tech with 14 points. Britney Anderson scored 11 and Hall added 10 for the Hokies.
Sparkle Davis came off the bench to lead West Virginia with 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting. Davis was 2 of 4 from 3-point distance and also made both free throw attempts to go with a team-high six assists.
LaQuita Owens added 15 points on 6 of 10 shooting. Junior forward Chakhia Cole failed to score in 29 minutes of action after scoring six in the season opener against LSU Sunday afternoon. Cole averaged 11.1 points per game last year as a sophomore.
The Mountaineers wrap up the three-game tournament with a game against Howard Tuesday at 5:45. West Virginia’s home opener is this Saturday Nov. 18, at the WVU Coliseum.
