Volleyball: Mountaineers to Close Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team will close its 2006 season with a BIG EAST road trip this weekend. The Mountaineers will first travel to Chicago, Ill., to take on DePaul at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11. WVU will then journey to Notre Dame, Ind., to face the Fighting Irish at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12.
West Virginia (2-27, 1-11) enters this weekend’s play after a 0-3 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday, Nov. 5. Setter/outside hitter Gina Cusanelli and outside hitter Abby Tevis led the Mountaineers attack with 11 kills each while libero Aurora Ebert-Santos contributed 23 digs against the Bearcats. On the season, Tevis averages 3.33 kills per game, the most on the team. Setter Kailee Goold registers 9.23 assists per game while middle blocker Lisa Hough commits a team-high .82 blocks per game.
DePaul (5-23, 0-12) dropped its seventh consecutive match as the Blue Demons fell 0-3 to Georgetown on Sunday, Nov. 5. Outside hitter Morgan Ingersoll headed the DePaul attack with 12 kills and 12 points against the Hoyas. Ellen Hayes, an outside hitter, made a team-high three blocks for the Blue Demons. Ingersoll registers 4.06 kills per game so far this season while setter Emily McGinnis averages 10.45 assists per game. The all-time series with DePaul is tied 1-1.
Notre Dame (15-10, 9-3) is coming off a 3-0 sweep of South Florida on Sunday, Nov. 5. Middle blocker Justine Stremick and outside hitter Mallorie Croal registered 15 kills each against the Bulls. Stremick also added a match-high seven kills and 18.5 points. On the season, defensive specialist/libero Danielle Herndon averages 5.02 digs per game. Stremick contributes 1.42 blocks per game which places her in a three-way tie for fourth place in the BIG EAST. The Fighting Irish will host Pitt on Saturday, Nov. 11, before taking on the Mountaineers. West Virginia trails 2-11 in the all-time series with Notre Dame.
