Tennis: WVU Captures Five Championships at Invite

MORGATNTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team won all five championship matches on the final day of play at the Martha Thorn Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
The squad completely dominated play over the weekend, placing Mountaineers in each championship match.
Leading the team was junior Natalia Prinz, who defeated senior Kelly Walsh in the Flight ‘A’ singles championship, 6-4, 6-2.
“I’m very happy for Natalia,” said coach Marc Walters. “She played terrific and you could tell she really wanted this.”
Junior Stacey Percival won the Flight ‘B’ singles title, defeating freshman Stephanie LaFortune, 6-4, 6-2. Senior Ashley Constantine won the last singles championship, taking the Flight ‘C’ bracket over injured freshman Gabriela Blaskovicova, 2-6, 0-3 (retired).
In doubles action, the powerful duo of Percival/Prinz defeated juniors Monica Lyskawa and Colleen Speaker, 8-1, in the Flight ‘A’ bracket. The Flight ‘B’ championship was captured by Blaskovicova/LaFortune, who defeated Constantine/Walsh, 8-3.
The team finished the invitational with 44 victories.
“This was a great way to end the fall season,” said coach Walters. “Our focus will now turn to the off-season and getting stronger in the weight room.”
The Mountaineers will return to action in January.
