MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University rowing team kicks off its 2006 fall season with a pair of competitions this weekend at the Head of the Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 7, and the Head of the Genesee on Sunday, Oct. 8.
“This weekend we are really looking forward to racing,” says head coach Nancy LaRocque. “We have a great group of women this year who are more committed than ever to creating fast boats.”
Saturday’s regatta held in Pittsburgh gives the women a chance to compete in the varsity eight as well as smaller boats such as the one, two and four person boats. The women will surely be tested as the 20-year-old event is one of the premier one-day regattas in the country and attracts some of the finest competition in the United States.
After the day of racing is complete in Pittsburgh, the women will hit the road and travel further north to Rochester, N.Y. Sunday’s races will test the Mountaineers’ will as it will be the second consecutive day the athletes compete in multiple events. WVU is slated to compete in the open heavyweight eights and the heavyweight fours with coxswain.
“We have never raced there before, but are looking forward to a different kind of format,” says LaRocque. “We race a head race in the morning, which is the typical, but in the afternoon, we will be racing a shortened course. It's a lot of racing over two days, but we feel that the women will benefit from the experience. I think we will see some great results.”
Saturday’s results can be followed in real time at headoftheoho.org, while complete tallies from Sunday’s racing can be seen on row2k.com.
