Volleyball: WVU Falls to Robert Morris

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Robert Morris this evening at the WVU Coliseum.
The Colonials (9-11) took the match 3-1 (30-22, 20-30, 30-27, 30-26).
Robert Morris showed early domination in game one. The Colonials quickly advanced to a 10-5 lead over West Virginia (1-18, 0-4 BIG EAST). With the help of middle blocker Janette Schneider’s six kills, Robert Morris took game one 30-22.
The Mountaineers went on a five-point scoring run in game two to hoist themselves 13-8 over the Colonials. Robert Morris tried to stage a comeback, but never again held the lead. Fueled by five kills from setter Kailee Goold, West Virginia triumphed 30-20 over Robert Morris.
In a close game three, WVU led Robert Morris until the Colonials battled to overtake the Mountaineers 23-22. From there, West Virginia could not regain momentum. With key kills from middle blocker Haley Schroeder, Robert Morris defeated WVU 30-27.
Game four was a nail biter as the score was tied 15 separate times. Robert Morris held the largest lead of the game, five points, twice. In what was a battle to the end it took a four point scoring drive from the Colonials to help boost them over the Mountaineers. With nine kills from middle blocker/outside hitter Emily Wolthuis, Robert Morris won game four 30-26.
Outside hitter Abby Tevis recorded 10 kills for the Mountaineers while Goold totaled 33 assists. Middle blocker Tammy Wolf tallied four blocks for the squad and setter Gina Cusanelli led the defense with 19 digs.
For the Colonials, Schneider recorded 20 kills, the most of the match, while setter Tawnya Storino totaled 51 assists.
West Virginia will host BIG EAST action this weekend at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers will take on South Florida at 2 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 7 and face Georgetown at 2 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 8.
