Football: Slaton Semifinalist for Maxwell Award

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University sophomore running back Steve Slaton is one of 15 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award given to college football’s player of the year, Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski announced today.
The announcement of the Maxwell Award will be made during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show to be aired on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006. Three finalists will be in attendance for the broadcast.
Slaton ranks fourth in the country in rushing averaging 151.3 yards per game and became one of just three WVU backs in school history to reach 1,000 yards in just their seventh game. Slaton’s 1,059 yards makes him one of six running backs to have reached the 1,000 yard mark so far this season.
Other candidates for the award include Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge, USC quarterback John David Booty, Michigan’s Mike Hart and Chad Henne, Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson, Florida quarterback Chris Leak, Cal running back Marshawn Lynch, Pitt quarterback Tyler Palko, Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson, Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, Rutgers running back Ray Rice, Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, Northern Illinois running back Garrett Wolfe and Boise State quarterback Jared Zabransky.
Voting will begin on Wednesday Nov. 3 and will close on Friday, Dec. 1.
