The win was the Mountaineer’s fifth consecutive Big East Conference victory.
The Mountaineers (13-1-2, 7-1-1) got on the board early when junior Kim Bonilla chipped the ball past Georgetown goalkeeper Jade Higgins off an assist from Deana Everrett just 6:53 into the match. The goal was Bonilla’s eighth of the season.
Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown talked about the need to get up on the Hoyas early -- especially coming off Friday night’s tough overtime victory against Villanova.
“It was a long hard fought game on Friday night and we had to come out ready to play,” said the coach. “It was important that we came out and did everything we could to put the ball in the back of the net.”
Just six minutes later Deana Everrett did just that, controlling the ball at the top of the WVU box and going coast-to-coast between Hoya defenders for a thrilling score. The goal gave the Mountaineers a comfortable 2-0 advantage at the 13:27 mark of the first half.
“I basically just dribbled it through the defense and the goalie came out and I just put it into the right corner,” Everrett said.
The Mountaineers added their final goal at the 52:37 mark of the second half when Everrett headed in a corner kick from Bonilla.
“I just went up for the header off the corner and the ball just barely brushed off my ponytail,” Everrett said.
The two goals for Everrett now give her a team-leading 16 for the season. Everrett also recognized the need for a fast start.
“We knew that we were going to have to go out hard and score first and we were able to do that today. We wanted to finish them right away,” Everrett said.
West Virginia dominated the pace of play out-shooting Georgetown, 14-3 on the afternoon.
The Mountaineers have their final two regular season matches at home against UConn and Providence. Izzo-Brown believes being at home will help the Mountaineers maintain their momentum going into the Big East tournament.
“There are so many adversities that you can’t control when you go on the road. It’s great to be home and sleeping in our own beds. Hopefully we will get a lot of fan support because we have two big games left so we really need everyone to come out and help us get these two wins,” Izzo-Brown said.
Georgetown dropped to 4-8-5, 1-6-2 with the loss.
The Mountaineers return to action Friday, Oct. 20, when they play host to Connecticut. Kick off from Dick Dlesk Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
