STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The West Virginia University indoor track team finished up day two of strong competition on the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track at the Penn State National Open Saturday, Jan. 28, in State College, Pa.
“I was really pleased with the level of the whole team’s performance this weekend,” head coach Jeff Huntoon said. “It was a stark contrast from a week ago. I think the top level of national competition brought it out of them.”
Senior Susan Davis ran a personal best time of 2:51.40 to capture the 1,000-meter run title. Davis ran alongside former teammate and twin sister Jennifer Davis, who ran unattached, to take the lead with 300-meters to go and never looked back.
Junior Alexis Noel continues to get better each week in the field events, jumping a personal best 1.70m in the high jump to finish seventh Saturday. Teammate Nancy Regalbuto finished one spot ahead of Noel at the same height.
Halimah Bashir placed eighth in the 400-meter with a time of 57.47, while senior Junique Morris finished second in her heat and eighteenth overall in the 200m (25.05).
Maria Stover posted a BIG EAST qualifying time of 5:08.07 in the women’s mile to finish fourth in her flight and senior Jen Hall tied for first in her flight of the pole vault (3.45m) and finished seventh overall.
The WVU 4x400 relay team recorded a time of 3:55.19 to finish the evening off strong. That mark just missed the ECAC qualifying time. Halimah Bashir, Junique Morris, Ishonte Johnson-Peters, and Raeleen Hunter composed the relay and helped it perform better than it has in recent years.
The Mountaineers return to their home track this Friday, Feb. 3, for the State Farm Shell Games in the WVU Shell Building.
