Swimming: WVU Men Defeat UConn, Women Tie

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's swimming team came up with a big win over previously undefeated Connecticut, 178.5-114.5, while the women tied the Huskies, 150-150, on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the WVU Natatorium.
The WVU men finish out the regular season 6-3, while the women finish their first winning season since 1996 with a record of 5-4-1.
"The girls did an excellent job today," head coach Sergio Lopez said. "UConn is a very good team. We wanted to come out today and keep improving, being a team and being together. We did that and it paid off. This was a great way for our seniors to go out and be proud of what they've done."
The meet was highlighted by a ceremony that recognized all nine of the two West Virginia team's senior swimmers. Those swimmers include: Jessica Banner, Ashley Bissett, Megan Carlson, Olga Tzinker, Julia Warnken, Michael Crabtree, Steven Earley, Chris Hagedorn and Rick Mann.
WVU's 200 medley men's relay started out the meet with a convincing first place finish as well as a new pool record. Mann, sophomore Nick Delic, Hagedorn and freshman Andrew Langenfeld combined in the race to finish in 1:32.35, more than two seconds ahead of Uconn's top relay team that took second (1:34.55).
The Mountaineers dominated the 200 fly as sophomore Pablo Marmolejo took first in 1:52.68, sophomore Eduardo Ramirez took second in 1:54.27 and Langenfeld took third in 1:54.32.
Marmolejo's second victory of the day came in the 200 back as he won in 1:52.13 and freshman Michael Walker placed second (1:52.49).
In his third win of the day, Marmolejo won the 200 IM (1:55.14), while Walker came in second (1:56.44) and freshman Nathan Farmer took third (1:56.90).
West Virginia also took over the 100 free as sophomore Nick Delic won in a time of 45.92, with Mann coming in second (47.82) and junior Kyle Williams in third (47.86).
Delic also captured first in the 100 breast as well in a time of 56.89.
Hagedorn enjoyed multiple wins on his final meet at West Virginia. He won the 50 free in 20.49, followed by Williams in second (21.25). His second win of the day came in the 100 fly with a time of 49.67, with Langenfeld close behind in second (50.01) and Mann in third (51.76).
Mann took first in the 100 back (52.43), followed by Walker in second (52.63).
Sophomore Felipe Cunha won the 200 breast in a time of 2:05.25.
Freshman Scottie Norton claimed first in the 1000 free in 9:40.50 and then grabbed second place in the 500 free (4:42.85).
In one of the most impressive swims of the day, the men's 200 free relay broke the pool record and won in a dominating time of 1:21.84, more than five seconds of the top UConn team. Delic, Williams, Langenfeld and Hagedorn all contributed to the win.
The women got multiple wins from different swimmers. Freshman Lindsey Largo got the team started with a win in the 1000 free in a time of 10:20.84.
Sophomore Martiza Paredes won the 200 free (1:52.66), while sophomore Bonnie Sutton grabbed second (1:55.39).
Freshman Isabel Perez topped all times in the 200 breast (2:22.05) and also took second in the 100 breast (1:06.77).
Freshman Rachel Fedyk continued to swim strong in the 50 free with a winning time of 24.11. Junior Lizzy Cleary grabbed second (24.55) with sophomore Erin Tudor in third (24.71).
Tudor won the 100 free in a time of 52.78, while Paredes finished second (52.86) and Cleary in third (54.35).
Freshman Taylor Stallings finished first in the 100 fly (58.11), followed by freshman Natalie Lautzenheiser (58.42). Stallings also took second in the 100 back (59.11).
The women finished off a strong day by winning the 200 free relay. Tudor, sophomore Elyse Fisher, Cleary and Fedyk combined for a first-place time of 1:36.85.
The Mountaineers return to action when they travel to the BIG EAST Championships from Feb. 15-18 in East Meadow, N.Y.
