MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University freshman wrestler David Jauregui was named the Eastern Wrestling League wrestler of the week on Monday, Jan. 16, for his performance at the Virginia Duals this past weekend.
The Santa Ana, Calif., native went 3-0 over the weekend at the 149-pound weight class with an important 8-6 win over No. 7-ranked Jeffrey Jaggers of Ohio State. Jauregui trailed 5-2 going into the final period against Jaggers and scored on two takedowns, one escape and two points for a near fall. The win over Jaggers marked the first nationally ranked wrestler he has defeated in his collegiate career.
Jauregui also defeated Rider’s Michael Kessler, 10-9, and Columbia’s David Sickles 12-7. He is now 15-5 on the season and was ranked for the first time in his career last week by TheWrestlingMall.com at No. 20.
Jauregui and the Mountaineers (1-4) return to action on Friday, Jan. 20, when they host Bloomsburg in their EWL opener at the WVU Coliseum. Wrestling begins at 7 p.m.
