Rifle: No. 1 Alaska-Fairbanks Tops WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team absorbed a 4662-4578 loss to No. 1-ranked Alaska-Fairbanks on Saturday in the Mountaineers’ last home match of the 2006 season.
The Nanooks (7-0) picked up the non-conference win by capturing both disciplines with a 2318-2287 win in smallbore and a 2344-2291triumph in air rifle.
West Virginia (1-5) top finishers in each discipline placed fifth overall in the match, as sophomore Lafe Kunkel fired a 580 smallbore and classmate Amy Smith tied a season-high with a 579 air rifle.
First-place overall finishers were the Nanooks’ Matthew Rawlings and his 586 smallbore along with Matthias Dierolf carding a 594 air rifle sum.
Other notable scores for West Virginia included junior Adam Somers firing four points higher than his previous career best in air rifle, and sophomore Natasha Dinsmore bettering her previous personal best in smallbore by a whopping 12 points by shooting a 562.
The Mountaineers return to action Monday against Nebraska in a Great America Rifle Conference match that will be held in Palmyra, Pa., beginning at 7 a.m.
