Swimming: Men and Women Close Out Winning Weekend

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams defeated both the men and women teams of Syracuse on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Webster Pool in Syracuse, N.Y.
The men were victorious winning 124-111 , while the women defeated the Orange 124-119. The victories come after both teams defeated St. Bonaventure on Friday night, 147-90 and 141-102 , respectively.
Leading the way for the men was sophomore Pablo Marmolejo with two wins. Marmolejo captured first place in the 100 IM (1:54.17) before winning the 200 fly (1:52.33) just two events later. Freshman Nathan Farmer and sophomore Nick Delic placed second and third in the 200 IM, respectively, to give the Mountaineers the top three spots. Senior Chris Hagedorn won the 50 free (20.80), while senior Kyle Williams placed second with a time of 21.34. Freshman Andrew Langenfeld claimed the 100 free with a time of 46.53, while freshman Antonio Cisneros came in second (47.54) and Willaims in third (47.58).
The men's relay teams proved to be successful again as senior Rick Mann, Delic, Marmolejo and Hagedorn comprised for the winning time in the 400 medley relay of 3:23.67. In the 400 free relay, Hagedorn, Mann sophomore Eduardo Ramirez and Delic won in a time of 3:06.04. The Mountaineers also got a second place finish in the 400 free relay from Langenfeld, freshmen Payton Brooks and Michael Walker and Cisneros (3:09.33).
The women got a strong performance from sophomore Maritza Paredes for the second straight day. Paredes won the 200 free (1:52.75) as well as the 100 free (52.78). Sophomore Bonnie Sutton finished right behind Paredes in the 200 free to place second (1:55.60), while freshman Taylor Stallings came in fourth (1:57.10). Freshman Rachel Fedyk won the 50 free for the second straight day with a time of 24.71. Freshman Isabel Perez won the 200 breast (2:23.30), while Fedyk came in second (2:25.77).
In relay action, the women placed second in the 400 medley. Sophomore Tina Gabrillo, freshmen Meghan Fiene and Natalie Lautenheiser and sophomore Elyse Fisher combined for a time of 4:01.79. In the last women's race of the day, the Mountaineers won the 400 free relay to clinch the victory over the Orange. Stallings, sophomore Erin Tudor, Sutton and Paredes won with a time of 3:32.02.
Sophomore Erica Pfeiffer dove well once again for West Virginia as she placed second in both the 1 meter and 3 meter with 228.81 and 219.32 points, respectively.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m. to host Cincinnati.
