MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team dropped its first match of the 2005 season to Southern Methodist 1-0 on Friday evening at the SMU/Radisson Hotel Classic in Dallas, Texas.
The Mountaineers (2-1-0, 0-0-0) and Mustangs (1-2-0, 0-0-0) played to a scoreless first half with WVU out shooting SMU 6-5. However, neither Nick Noble nor Mustang goalkeeper Steve Sanbo were forced to make many saves through the first period as they recorded two and one saves, respectively.
In the 65th minute of play Southern Methodist forward Duke Hashimoto broke the deadlock when he got free at the top of the box to tally the first goal of the season on the Mountaineer defense.
Although both teams had few shots in the first half they had even fewer in the second period. Both teams only recorded three shots apiece and Noble was the only keeper that was forced to make a save.
West Virginia got its only two shots on goal from midfielders Dan Stratford and Matt Anstey.
The Mountaineers will look to rebound quickly from the loss as they face No. 3 ranked New Mexico on Sunday, Sept. 11, for their second game of the tournament. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
