MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s soccer team retained its spot among the nation’s 25 best squads for the week of September 6.
The Mountaineers (2-2-0, 0-1-0) dropped in all three polls after posting a 1-1-0 record last week. SoccerBuzz gave WVU its highest spot this week, tabbing West Virginia 19th. Soccer America has the Mountaineers ranked 25th and the NSCAA gave West Virginia the No. 20 spot.
Six of West Virginia 2005 opponents are either ranked or receiving votes this week: Portland, Virginia, Connecticut, Marquette, William & Mary and Dayton. Tennessee was ranked when WVU beat the Lady Vols, giving the Mountaineers at least seven matches against one-time ranked opponents this season.
Also announced today was West Virginia freshman Deana Everrett’s selection to the BIG EAST honor roll for the week. The Oakville, Ontario, native scored the game-winner, her second goal of the season, against Tennessee this past weekend. The victory gave WVU its first win over a ranked foe this season.
The Mountaineers begin a five-match road trip with the Nike Invitational in Portland, Ore., this upcoming weekend. West Virginia faces Washington on Friday, Sept., 9 at 7:30 p.m., and plays tournament host No. 4 Portland at 4:30 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 11. Both times are Eastern.
