MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Statements from West Virginia University football coach Rich Rodriguez and tailback Jason Gwaltney:
Coach Rich Rodriguez:
“Jason Gwaltney is a college freshman away from home for the first time and, like most freshmen, battling some homesickness. All young people need understanding and space as they make that adjustment, especially during their first semester of college. Jason is a team guy and he is working hard in our program. We’re proud of Jason and he has a great future with Mountaineer football. I’m embarrassed that a young man in our family would have to endure false rumors and read them in the newspaper.”
Jason Gwaltney:
“The rumors about my being unhappy and somehow unsatisfied at WVU are untrue and unfair and embarrassing to me. I have been homesick, like my friend Dwayne Jarrett was at USC last year, like lots of freshmen are, but my coaches and teammates have been good to help me and give me encouragement.
“I’m happy I chose West Virginia, I’m adjusting to college and I appreciate the support of my family, friends and my football family in working with me through this adjustment. I’m looking forward to a great career in a Mountaineer uniform.”
