MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team used goals from three different players to defeat Robert Morris 3-0 Wednesday evening at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va.
Two freshmen and a junior combined to give the Mountaineers (6-4-0, 2-2-0 BIG EAST) the trio of goals against the Colonials (4-3-0, 0-0-0 NEC), while the stifling WVU defense stepped up to record its sixth shutout of the year.
West Virginia led 1-0 at the half because of a goal scored from six yards out by junior Jarrod Smith off of an assist from Matt Anstey in the 20th minute. The Havelock, New Zealand, native took the cross from Anstey and headed in goal number four of the season.
The Mountaineers lit up the scoreboard again in 62nd minute when freshman sparkplug Sean Brooks found himself open at the top of the goal box. The Woodstock, Ga., native let a shot rip that tailed over the head of RMU goalkeeper Brandon Regan and into the back of the net in the upper left corner. The goal was the first of Brooks’ career.
In the last minute of play WVU iced the match when freshman forward Zak Boggs received a pass from Smith in front of the net from five yards out and poked it past Regan for his third goal of the season.
Although West Virginia and the Colonials each tallied eight corner kicks apiece, the Mountaineers controlled the pace of play throughout the match and gave Robert Morris very few chances at the goal. WVU out-shot Robert Morris 17-12 and got eight shots on goal compared to RMU’s four.
Junior Mountaineer goalkeeper Nick Noble looked solid throughout the evening as he posted four saves in the match. Noble and the defense ended Colonial sophomore forward Jacek Przednowek’s streak of five consecutive matches with a goal.
Regan recorded five saves in the match in 90 minutes of play.
West Virginia has now won eight matches in a row against Robert Morris. The defense has a streak of not allowing more than two goals in 33 consecutive matches.
WVU travels to South Bend, Ind., to face BIG EAST rival Notre Dame on Saturday, Oct. 1. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
