MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team got their fifth straight win by defeating Duquesne 3-1 (30-26, 30-22, 24-30, 30-27) in the WVU Classic on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005.
West Virginia (9-3) used a total team effort to defeat the Dukes. Sophomore Kailee Goold had a double-double, contributing 58 assists and 17 digs. Junior Aurora Ebert-Santos had another solid defensive match with 33 digs.
"Kailee put the ball where we needed it to be for the hitters to make some plays," assistant coach Camille Gutierrez said. "Aurora had some great digs as well that helped us tremendously."
In game one, Kelly Mullins led the Mountaineers with seven kills. Up 17-14, West Virginia went on a four point run with serves from Kailee Goold before closing out the game 30-26.
West Virginia jumped out to an early 11-4 lead in game two and never looked back. Zolna led the Mountaineers with six kills, defeating Duquesne 30-22.
In game three, Duquesne fought back, using four team blocks and three different players with four kills apiece before beating the Mountaineers 30-24.
But in the fourth game, West Virginia was too much for the Dukes to handle. Senior Julie Hockenson and Zolna stepped up with eight kills each in the final game winning 30-27.
Another highlight for the Mountaineers was the outstanding play from the three seniors, Hockenson, Mullins and Zolna. Hockenson stepped up big with seven blocks. Mullins and Zolna each had a double-double, with Zolna having 22 kills and 11 digs and Mullins adding 19 kills and 10 digs.
"Offensively, Julie's attack percentage was great," Gutierrez said. "In the fourth game when we really needed someone for the go-to point, she stepped up for us."
The Mountaineers return to action tonight at 8 p.m. when they close tournament play against Memphis.
"Tonight will be a battle," Gutierrez said. "Memphis is a strong, athletic team, so it should be fun to watch."
