MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team concluded its trip the SMU/Radisson Hotel Classic Sunday by dropping a 2-0 decision to No. 3 New Mexico in Dallas, Texas.
New Mexico (4-0-0) scored early on the Mountaineers (3-2-0) in the 10th minute of play as defender Andrew Boyens back-tapped the ball into the net off a Lance Watson corner kick.
West Virginia picked up the pace in the second half, but the Lobos added an insurance goal with just over one minute remaining in the match from Jeff Rowland to get the win and the tournament title for New Mexico.
Despite the loss WVU’s defense has not allowed more than two goals in a match in its last 28 times out.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Sept. 16, when they travel to Piscataway, N.J., for a 8 p.m. match against BIG EAST foe Rutgers.
