Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 11 West Virginia University women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 5 Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium.
West Virginia and Virginia battled in a scoreless match until the 74:47 mark when a through ball from Shannon Foley set up Kelly Hammond who beat WVU goalkeeper Lana Bannerman to her far post.
WVU almost evened the score with 20 seconds remaining in the contest when senior Mollie Merkel sent a cross into the box, but UVA goalkeeper Christina De Vries came off her line to intercept the cross, negating West Virginia’s final chance to even the score.
The Mountaineers had a great chance to get on the board early in the match when Kiley Harris, who was streaking down the right side of the field, received a pass from Ashley Banks that left her with only the De Vries to beat. Harris’ shot sailed wide of the net at the 4:52 mark.
A great save by Lana Bannerman kept the score knotted at 0-0 in the 32nd minute. Virginia midfielder Shannon Foley bent a corner kick perfectly toward the center of the goalmouth and Bannerman extended, punching the ball out to prevent a UVA score.
Minutes later senior defender Kambria Riggins won a 50-50 ball in the Cavalier third that redirected straight to senior Marisa Kanela who played a square ball in the front of the goal but no one was there to finish the play.
Later in the half, Sarah Senty fed Ariel Thompson the ball, leaving Thompson one-vs.-one with Bannerman. Again the Naperville, Ill., native came up huge, taking the ball off Thompson’s foot.
The teams went into the locker room knotted 0-0 at the half.
UVA missed a strong chance early in the second when Sarah Curtis one-timed a drop pass from Kelly Hammond over the goal.
In the 76th minute, a Virginia foul outside the box set up a WVU free kick. Senior Marisa Kanela played the ball to Banks who strongly headed the ball toward the goal; unfortunately, De Vries was waiting and made the save.
With the loss, West Virginia’s record falls to 1-1-0, while Virginia’s advances to 2-0-0.
The Mountaineers return to action on Thursday, Sept. 1, when they travel to Pitt for their BIG EAST opener at 7 p.m.
