Volleyball: WVU Falls to Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio - The West Virginia University volleyball team fell short in its attempt to knock off tournament host Ohio by a score of 3-0 (20-30, 22-30, 29-31) at the AmeriHost Inn and Suites Invitational on Saturday, August 27 at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.
WVU (1-2) was able to hang in the first game until the Bobcats went up 16-11. Ohio used a number of spurts to take advantage and win by a score of 20-30.
In game two, the Mountaineers held an early lead and were able to keep pace until Ohio used their experience to make a move and go on a 7-2 run late in the game, and onto a 22-30 win.
Game three proved to be the most highly contest game of the entire match. The team's traded points throughout the game. The Mountaineers faced game point twice and were able to fight back before the Bobcats took the contest with a close score of 29-31.
"We hung tough today," assistant coach Camille Gutierrez said. "Overall, we played very good for this being our first game situation of the season. It's a good building point."
West Virginia was led by Julie Hockenson who registered 9 kills, with 4 other Mountaineers contributing 6 kills.
A shining point for the Mountaineers is the all-tournament selection of Aurora Ebert-Santos and Stephanie Zolna. Ebert-Santos recorded an impressive 57 digs during the 3-game tournament and Zolna led West Virginia with a total of 38 kills.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Sept. 2, when they travel to Akron, Ohio to take part in the Hilton Invitational. West Virginia will take on Oakland at 5 p.m., followed by a double-header on Saturday, Sept. 3, as they face Elon and Akron at noon and 7 p.m., respectively.
