MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University rowing coach Nancy LaRocque has rescinded her resignation and will remain the team's head coach, athletic director Ed Pastilong announced today.
"Initially, the decision to leave was very hard for me," LaRocque said. "I got a chance to think things through thoroughly and the decision to stay was easy.
"First and foremost, I am strongly committed to this program. I want to maintain our course of growing and developing into a national contender. We have made so many gains in the past five years and I just can't walk away from that.
"I have an unwavering love for this state, university and team. I can't say enough about how appreciative I am of the support from the athletic department. We will be out recruiting this summer and look forward to the fall season."
LaRocque was selected as WVU's first-ever rowing coach when the program started in 2000; she came to WVU from Vassar. In its inaugural season, the Mountaineer rowing women's four won the BIG EAST and Dad Vail regattas and was the runner-up in the Henley Regatta in England. The Mountaineers have been high placers in a number of competitions on both the East and West Coasts during the program's five-year history.
A 1997 Massachusetts graduate and Dover, N.H., native, LaRocque is a former Atlantic 10 champion and a veteran of the U.S. Rowing Association's elite development program.
