MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Villanova Wildcats ended West Virginia’s five-game win streak on Saturday afternoon with a 13-6 victory at Villanova in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
The Wildcats (27-12-2, 8-12-1) broke open a 2-2 tie with a six-run third inning to take its first lead and never trail behind strong outings from freshmen Kevin Mulvey and James Dolbier. Mulvey struck out nine Mountaineer batters in seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the season while right fielder Dolbier went 2-for-4 with six RBI.
Dolbier followed three base hits to open the third frame with a grand slam to right center to highlight the inning.
Right hander Kevin Korzun made his second career start for WVU (24-27, 9-12) and was touched for eight runs on nine hits through 2.1 innings worked.
Villanova would plate five more runs on six hits in the fourth inning to build a 13-2 lead. Six Wildcat batters tallied two or more hits on the afternoon.
West Virginia collected four runs in the seventh inning to narrow the deficit. Outfielder Lee Fritz singled to right center scoring catcher David Carpenter and second baseman Tyler Kuhn. First baseman Kyle Matuszek and shortstop Doug Nelms also tallied RBI singles.
The Mountaineers took an early 2-0 lead after one half inning as freshman Kuhn opened the game with a home run to right field. Nelms’ first RBI came on a tough groundout that scored Stan Posluszny who had walked earlier in the inning.
That lead was short-lived, as the Wildcats scored two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Third baseman Justin Jenkins extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 3-for-5 performance and Nelms finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Carpenter and Fritz also collected two hits a piece.
Ryan Hill and Trent Ridgley worked innings in relief for West Virginia.
The two teams close out the three-game series on Sunday at noon.
