MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University wrestler Greg Jones will be featured in Thursday’s edition of Sports Illustrated On Campus. This week’s issue of SI On Campus pays tribute to the best college athletes of the winter season with Jones named one of 11 student-athletes chosen as Winter Players of the Year.
The Mountaineer senior is a three-time NCAA champion and three-time Eastern Wrestling League wrestler of the year. Jones became only the 39th wrestler in NCAA history to win three titles and did not give up an offensive point the entire tournament in being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrester.
Jones closed out his senior season going a perfect 25-0 while outscoring his opponents 298-82 on the year. He also became only the 20th wrestler in NCAA history to win multiple national titles at different weight classes. The Slickville, Pa., native won as a freshman at 174 pounds and added two more at 184 pounds in his final two seasons.
Jones, WVU’s all-time wins leader, finished his collegiate career with a 51-match win streak and back-to-back undefeated seasons. Jones was taken down only 10 times in 130 career matches while building a career record of 126-4.
Also making the list were Andrew Bogut (Utah – men’s basketball), Seimone Augustus (LSU women’s basketball), Kerron Clement (Florida – men s track & field), Tianna Madison (Tennessee – women’s track & field), Brett Sterling (Colorado College – men’s ice hockey), Natalie Darwitz (Minnesota – women’s ice hockey), Ryan Lochte (Florida – men’s swimming), Kirsty Coventry (Auburn – women’s swimming), Guillermo Alvarez (Minnesota – men’s gymnastics) and Kristen Maloney (UCLA – women’s gymnastics).
