Baseball: UConn Takes Game Two

The Huskies led 2-0 on a Vin DiFazio and Steven Malinowski RBI. Malinowski increased UConn's lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning with his first home run of the season.
With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, designated hitter Kyle Matuszek crushed a first-pitch fastball over the centerfield wall scoring right fielder Chad McKown who had walked. Matuszek’s third home run of the season cut UConn’s advantage to 4-2.
Connecticut added insurance runs in seventh and eighth innings to extend its lead to 9-2. DiFazio notched an RBI single and then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Dennis Donovan in the seventh. Jeff Hourigan homered to centerfield and Malinowski drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Sophomore hurler Wes Osbourn tossed 6 1/3 innings allowing seven runs on 11 hits in the loss. The left-hander dips to 3-2 on the season.
Malinowski led the UConn bats going 3-for-5 with four RBI while DiFazio went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Freshman Kevin Korzun relieved Osbourn to finish the seventh before turning things over to sophomore Trent Ridgley who completed the eighth inning.
Shortstop Doug Nelms third baseman Justin Jenkins each notched two hits in the loss for WVU.
With the win in game one, head coach Greg Van Zant holds 299 career wins. The 11th-year skipper can pick up career win number 300 and the Mountaineers can take the series with the third and final game scheduled for tomorrow at noon.
