MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University quarterback Rasheed Marshall was selected in the fifth round of the NFL draft Sunday by the San Francisco 49ers. Marshall was the 174th overall pick in the draft.
The Big East offensive player of the year passes for 1,886 yards and ran for 861 more while accounting for 23 total touchdowns as a senior. Marshall finished his career ranked first among all Big East quarterbacks in rushing yards with 2,040 and ranks first in WVU history in career touchdowns responsible for with 69.
The 5-foot-11-inch, 185-pound Pittsburgh native ranks fourth in career rushing touchdowns with 24, fourth in career passing yards with 5,558 and fourth in career pass completions with 433.
It was his tremendous athleticism that led to the 49ers drafting Marshall as a wide receiver.
Marshall joins WVU teammates Pacman Jones and Chris Henry taken in the draft. Both were picked yesterday. Jones was the sixth overall player taken in the first round by the Tennessee Titans while Henry went in the third round to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The three players drafted were the most in one year in fifth-year coach Rich Rodriguez, who had a pair of players taken in 2003 (Lance Nimmo and James Davis) and one player selected last year (Quincy Wilson). It was the most players taken in a single year since 2000 when four players (Anthony Becht, Jerry Porter, Barrett Green and Marc Bulger) were drafted.
Several WVU players are expected to sign free agent contracts and those will be announced in the coming days.
