Rowing: WVU Finishes Strong at Knecht Cup

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University rowing team's varsity eight boat rowed to a fifth-place finish in the third finals, placing them 17th overall, on Sunday, April 17, at the Knecht Cup in Camden, N.J.
The Mountaineers' eight boat started out competition on Saturday, April 16, with a fourth-place finish (8:00.20) in the preliminaries, finishing behind Boston College (7:53.18), Marist (7:55.98) and George Washington (7:59.10).
In the semi-finals, WVU got stuck in a very tough heat with the eventual champion UMass, who also took first place in the semis in a time of 7:35.00. The Mountaineers took fifth place in the semis (7:58.20), beating out host school Villanova.
In the third finals on Sunday WVU finished the course in 7:06.50, its best time of the weekend by almost 52 seconds. The time put the boat behind Colgate (6:57.70), Villanova (7:00.08), Fordham (7:03.20) and Temple (7:04.90). Connecticut came in behind the Mountaineers with a time of 7:14.10.
Also racing on the weekend for WVU were the varsity four and the frosh/second varsity eight boats. The varsity four boat finished the highest of any West Virginia boats on Sunday as they took fifth in the petite finals, 11th overall, with a finals time of 8:24.20. The frosh/second varsity eight boat finished third in the third finals, 15th overall, with a time of 8:16.80.
The Mountaineers return to the water for competition on Sunday, April 24, when they travel to Worcester, Mass., for the BIG EAST Championships.
