MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team opens its 2005 BIG EAST schedule with a pair of matches on March 25-26 at the Drumlins Tennis Center in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Mountaineers battle Connecticut on Friday at 10 a.m. before taking on Syracuse at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
WVU (8-4) enters Friday’s match in the midst of a three match winning streak with victories over Troy (4-3), Hofstra (7-0) and St. Bonaventure (6-0). The Mountaineers are an upset loss to Southern Miss away from having a perfect 8-0 record against unranked opponents.
Connecticut (2-5) opens its BIG EAST schedule on Thursday against Syracuse before competing against the Mountaineers on Friday. UConn’s only victories this season are against Mesa and Scottsdale Community College.
Syracuse, on the other hand, enters the weekend with a record of 8-6 including a conference mark of 3-0. The Orange owns wins over St. John’s (4-3), Seton Hall (5-2) and Rutgers (6-1). Syracuse opened the season by winning seven of its first eight matches, but has hit rough times as of late, falling in five of its last six contests.
“As far as we are concerned, the real season begins this weekend,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “Every conference match is going to be grueling and I think our first twelve matches of the year have done a lot to prepare us for the BIG EAST schedule.”
