MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A well-rested West Virginia University women’s basketball team will resume Big East play Saturday with an afternoon game at Georgetown.
The Mountaineers (12-7, 3-5) have been idle since losing at Rutgers, 70-49 last Sunday and face an 8-12 Hoya team that won its most recent game against Syracuse, 70-56, on the road Tuesday night.
In that game freshman Kieraah Marlow produced her league-leading 11th double-double by scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Senior Mary Lisicky contributed 14 points and junior Christina Whitt made her first career start and tallied 10 points, six rebounds and four blocks against the Orange.
Marlow leads the Hoyas with an average of 13.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Varda Tamoulinis, a 6-foot-3 senior forward from Moscow, averages 11.6 points per game although she didn’t play against Syracuse.
Georgetown’s other league wins have come against Providence and St. John’s.
West Virginia is a half-game ahead of the Hoyas in the standings and is looking for its first victory ever at Georgetown in six previous meetings. In 2003 West Virginia dropped a 78-58 verdict to the Hoyas.
Sophomore Meg Bulger continues to lead the Big East in scoring with an average of 20.4 points per game. Sherell Sowho is averaging 12.8 points and Yolanda Paige is averaging 11.6 points and 9.3 assists per game.
West Virginia is averaging 67.4 points per game and is shooting 46.3 percent from the field for the season.
Last year, the Mountaineers won a 70-61 decision over Georgetown in Morgantown in the last meeting between the two schools. Georgetown holds a 9-4 advantage in series play.
