PITTSBURGH – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team continued its dominance over unranked opponents with a 6-1 victory over Toledo on Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Oxford Athletic Club in Pittsburgh.
The Mountaineers (5-3) won five out of six singles matches, each in straight sets, and won two of three doubles contests to take the extra point. The victory improved West Virginia’s record against non-ranked opponents to 5-0 and gave the Mountaineers their third victory in four matches.
Freshman No. 1 seed Natalia Prinz suffered WVU’s only singles loss of the day after she fell to Myriam Cueva, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, in a hard-fought three set match. Sophomore two seed Kelly Walsh topped Viviana Rivero, 6-4, 6-3, while freshman Monica Lyskawa defeated Daniella Moran, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 3 position.
Freshman Kathryn Gerber breezed by Sarah Horning, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot while junior five seed Raynie Theis prevailed over Sarah VanderMolen, 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Stacey Percival nearly swept Sarah Thompson en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory in six seed singles.
The duo of Prinz and Walsh fell to Cueva and Horning, 8-6, in a grueling one seed doubles match. Theis and Percival made up for WVU’s setback by defeating VanderMolen and Rivero, 8-4, in No. 2 doubles.
Gerber and freshman Colleen Speaker combined forces in No. 3 doubles to oust Thompson and Moran, 8-3. The contest marked Speaker’s first collegiate action as a Mountaineer.
“The girls really gave a great team effort today,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “The effort was fantastic and the play was stellar. We have a week off to continue to improve for our match with a red-hot Southern Mississippi team next weekend.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Mar. 11, when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to compete against Southern Mississippi.
