MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team heads to Charleston, S.C., on Friday, Feb. 25, to face East Carolina in its first game of the Citadel tournament at noon.
The Mountaineers (2-3) are coming off of a tough weekend at the Baseball at the Beach tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. WVU dropped a trio of games to Clemson, 7-2, East Carolina, 8-2 and Coastal Carolina, 13-2.
Newcomers Tyler Kuhn and Chad McKown have developed as the team's top offensive firepower through five games as they are tied for the team lead in hits with seven hits a piece. Freshman infielder Kuhn has reached 11 bases in 21 at bats, while Western Carolina transfer McKown has recorded three doubles already this season.
On the mound for Friday's game against the Pirates (3-3) will be senior hurler Shawn Miller. Miller (0-1) has started two games for the Mountaineers so far, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 8 1/3 innings pitched for a 3.24 ERA. The Troy, N.Y., native leads the team in strike outs with eight.
WVU will be looking for revenge from last Saturday's 8-2 loss to the Pirates. In that game the Mountaineers fell behind early after ECU put up six runs in the second inning. Besides a Lee Fritz two-run home run the team's offense could never get going.
P.J. Connelly will once again be the pitcher WVU will face. Connelly pitched 7 1/3 innings last weekend against WVU, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out five.
West Virginia is 5-7 all-time against East Carolina.
The road will not get any easier for WVU in Charleston, as it faces The Citadel (5-2) on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 3 p.m. and N.C. State (8-1) on Sunday Feb. 27, at 11 a.m.
