MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University wrestler Greg Jones has been named the Eastern Wrestling League's wrestler of the week for his effort in the Mountaineers run to their dual meet championship.
With WVU trailing Edinboro 17-9 on Thursday, Jones quickly showed a crowd of 665 why he is a two-time national and three-time EWL champion. Jones used his quickness for a takedown just three seconds into the match before turning Edinboro’s Jim Gibson on his back. The Mountaineer senior collected his team-leading fifth fall of the season in just 13 seconds to bring the crowd to their feet.
On Friday, Jones gave WVU a 22-10 lead against Cleveland State with his technical fall victory. In his final home showing, he posted an impressive 17-2 win over CSU’s Ron Howard. Jones raced out to a 6-2 lead on three takedowns in the opening three minutes and then held Howard scoreless in the final two periods. He tallied back points with eight seconds remaining for the tech fall.
Jones, the No. 1 ranked 184-pounder in the country, improved to 17-0 on the season while capturing the EWL points champion award for his amazing 33 dual meet points in six league contests. His 33 points came on three falls, an injury default, a technical fall and a major decision.
The Slickville, Pa., native finishes his EWL dual meet career record at a perfect 27-0. Jones boasts a career record of 118-4, two shy of becoming West Virginia's all-time wins leader.
The Hodge Trophy candidate also sports a 43-match win streak. He previously set the school record for consecutive wins with 46 from 2001-03.
The league wrestler of the week honor is the seventh of his career for the Mountaineer senior.
Jones and his West Virginia teammates return to action at the 2005 EWL Wrestling Championships on March 6-7. Clarion will host the NCAA-qualifying tournament, which the Mountaineers won a season ago.
