MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University volleyball head coach Veronica Hammersmith today announced the signing of four recruits for the 2006 season.
Those athletes signing with West Virginia are Kristina Gallahan of Mooresville, N.C., Nicole Jones of Rancine, Wis., Marissa Meyers of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Abby Raines of Washington, Miss.
Gallahan, a 6-0 middle and outside hitter, is an offensive threat that served as team captain for coach Nancy Dilks at Mooresville High. She was North Piedmont's conference player of the year in 2003 and led her team to a state championship in 2004.
"Kristina will help us with her versatility that she shows," Hammersmith said. "Her being able to play both middle and outside will be positive."
Jones, a 6-0 setter, served as a three-year captain and was named team MVP for two seasons at Washington Park High. A two-time all-conference player, Jones serves as vice president of the National Honors Society and has played three years with the Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball Club. Her brother, Chris, plays volleyball at Southern California.
"Nicole is a first-class setter and will most likely redshirt her first year to learn the system," Hammersmith said. "She will help maintain the high quality of setting our program has had in the past."
Meyers, a 5-11 outside hitter and defensive specialist, has played for Club Fusion Volleyball for the past six years and being a National Attendant for the past three years. She is also a high honors student at Crystal Lake South High.
"Marissa will help defensively to fill a spot in the near future," Hammersmith said.
Raines, a 6-0 middle and outside hitter, was a member of Team Saint Louis, a club volleyball team that qualified for the national tournament this year. An all-conference selection in 2005, she helped her team at Washington High to a final four appearance. She was a also a member of the All-Academic team selection from 2002-2005.
"All four players have good experience at the club level and they will help to fill specific needs to improve our team," Hammersmith said. "They each have the ability to help quite a bit in the future."
