MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team shot better than visiting Kentucky in the smallbore discipline but came up short in the aggregate, losing 4587-4544 on Saturday at the Mountaineer Rifle Range.
Winning the smallbore will help West Virginia in seeding for the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) championships in February; however, the loss drops the Mountaineers’ record to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
The Mountaineers fired a 2280 in smallbore, two points below their season average, and outscored the Wildcats’ sum of 2273 by seven points. Kentucky (4-4, 2-1) held a 2314-2264 advantage in air rifle as West Virginia’s score was a season low.
Senior Brian Launer led West Virginia in both disciplines shooting a match-high 576 in smallbore. Launer fired 573 in air rifle, but was outdone by four other Wildcats, including Vicki Goss who shot a 584. One other notable score for the Mountaineers was sophomore Lafe Kunkel carding the third-best smallbore score of the match with a 571.
West Virginia is off for the remainder of the semester before it picks up action again for its final home match of the season as it hosts Alaska-Fairbanks on Jan. 14 beginning at 8 a.m.
