Volleyball: WVU Falls to No. 5 Notre Dame

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to No. 5 Notre Dame 3-0 (22-30, 20-30, 17-30) on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the WVU Coliseum.
In game one, the Mountaineers (15-11, 3-8 BIG EAST) came out with strong intensity. Behind powerful hitting from senior Stephanie Zolna, West Virginia took its largest lead of the game of four at 12-8. But the Irish fought back with serving from Carolyn Cooper and eventually closed out the game 30-22.
The momentum from Notre Dame's (21-1, 11-0 BIG EAST) game one win carried over into the second as they won 30-22. Lauren Brewster led the Irish with seven kills.
Game three proved to be the last as Notre Dame took advantage of some West Virginia mistakes to win 30-17.
For West Virginia, Zolna led the way with 11 kills. Sophomore Abby Tevis added five kills and 12 digs, while senior Julie Hockenson had four kills.
Notre Dame's Lauren Brewster had a game-high 17 kills, followed by Lauren Kelbley who had nine.
The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 6, as they take on DePaul at 2 p.m. It will serve as the last home match of the season and Senior Day.
