MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The 15th-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team travels to Milwaukee, Wis., for a BIG EAST semifinal match with No. 11 Connecticut at 3:30 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 4.
West Virginia (11-4-3) advanced to the conference semifinal round for the fourth time in five seasons with a strong 4-2 road win over Villanova last Sunday. In that match, the Mountaineers exploded for a season-high four goals and 12 points.
The Mountaineers have won eight of their last nine matches. Their only loss came two weeks ago at Connecticut by a 2-1 margin.
Connecticut, the 2004 BIG EAST tournament champions, made the semifinal round by moving past Rutgers 4-2 on penalty kicks after playing to a double-overtime tie last Sunday. Prior to their tie with Rutgers, the Huskies (14-3-2) had won nine of their previous 10 contests, losing only to No. 6 Notre Dame on Oct. 14.
WVU has never lost a BIG EAST semifinal contest, going 2-0-1 in those appearances. West Virginia advanced to the championship match in 2001 and 2002 and tied Villanova in 2003 (the Wildcats advanced to the final match on penalty kicks).
CSTV will be televising Friday’s match live. An audio broadcast of West Virginia’s semifinal contest as well as a live gamecast can be accessed via MSNsportsNET.com.
Tournament host and 12th-ranked Marquette and No. 6 Notre Dame face off in the second semifinal match. Kickoff for that contest is set for 6:00 p.m.
Winners of both semifinal matches advance to the BIG EAST championship match at noon on Sunday, Nov. 6. FSN Pittsburgh will be airing the contest on a one-hour tape delay at 1:00 p.m., that day.
