Rifle: WVU Bows at Navy

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In its first non-conference match and first road match of the season, the West Virginia University rifle team suffered a 4643-4562 loss at Navy on Friday.
WVU’s best discipline was in smallbore as the Mountaineers compiled a team score of 2284 compared to their 2278 air rifle total.
Senior Brian Launer was WVU’s best shooter on the day leading the Mountaineers with a 578 smallbore score and a 574 air rifle sum. Lafe Kunkel’s 574 smalbore score was the only WVU shooter to shoot in the 570s. All of Navy’s counting team shooters fired at least 573 in both disciplines.
The performance was Navy’s best of the season as the Midshipmen improve to 4-2 on the year. Chris Schneider and Josh Albright both fired match-high 582s in smallbore while Schneider also carded a match-best 586 air.
Navy’s aggregate score consisted of a 2314 smallbore and a 2329 air rifle team scores.
West Virginia falls to 1-3 on the season and returns to action at home against Kentucky on Dec. 3.
