MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team is set to host its first NCAA tournament match since 1973, when it takes on Robert Morris at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m.
“Robert Morris is a very good team and we are expecting to have to come out and play very good soccer to get the win,” says head coach Mike Seabolt.
The Mountaineers (12-7-2) are making their first appearance in the tournament since 1992 when they fell to William & Mary, 2-0, in the South Regional. The team will also be looking for only the program’s second win in the NCAA tournament all-time.
West Virginia played one of the hardest schedules in school history in 2005 as it faced 15 teams with a .500 record or better. Only one Top 25 team (UCLA) played more .500 or better teams than the Mountaineers.
The Colonials (11-7-1) are ending an NCAA tournament drought of their own as they have not made an appearance since 1994. Robert Morris had to earn its way into the tournament by knocking off No. 1 seeded Monmouth in the NEC championship match, 3-2, in overtime.
RMU will be in search of redemption as the Mountaineers won the regular season match between the two teams, 3-0, on Sept. 28, in Morgantown. WVU’s leading scorer Jarrod Smith tallied a goal in that match, while freshmen Zak Boggs and Sean Brooks each added a goal apiece.
The winner of the match between West Virginia and Robert Morris will go on to face No. 9 seeded Akron on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Akron, Ohio.
