UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman set the WVU women’s soccer record for career shutouts as the 20th-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team shutout Hofstra, 3-0, on a cold Friday night in NCAA tournament action at Penn State’s Jeffrey Field.
It took 46 minutes for the Mountaineers (12-5-3) to get on the board, but behind Bannerman in net and senior Marisa Kanela delivering a five-point performance, West Virginia secured the first round victory.
"We beat a great team tonight,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We came out in the second half and made sure we finished our chances.”
The shutout was Bannerman’s ninth of the season and the 25th of her career, moving her ahead of former goalkeeper Stacey Adams on the career shutouts list.
"I can’t describe how excited I am at this moment,” said Bannerman following the win. “I have to give a lot of credit to my defense over the last three years, especially to Karrie Hutchins. I have been extremely lucky to have great defenders in front of me. I feel blessed. This is a great honor.”
"Lana Bannerman has earned this record with hard work and intensity,” Izzo-Brown said. “I’m proud that she will go down as one of the best goalkeepers in WVU history. Lana has laid a foundation of a great goalkeeping tradition at West Virginia.”
West Virginia took a 1-0 lead one minute into the second half when senior Rachael Minnich flicked a throw-in from sophomore Ashley Banks to a charging Kanela, who tapped in her team-high eighth goal of the season.
Minutes later, Kanela appeared to have her second goal of the night when she turned on a cross and sent a low volley to the far corner of the Hofstra (14-4-3) goal, but the goal was waved off for offsides.
Kanela did help the Mountaineers gain a two goal lead when she connected with Banks on a corner kick at the 58:42 mark. The goal was the fifth of Banks’ sophomore season and the assist improved Kanela’s career-high total to nine.
Kanela put the Mountaineers up 3-0 with her ninth goal of the season in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Kiley Harris had a shot blocked on top of the 18-yard box and the deflection landed squarely at Kanela’s feet. The Wantagh, N.Y. native, scored her second goal of the match, with a low line drive to the far corner of the Hofstra goal.
Hofstra held a slim 7-6 shot advantage at the half, but it was WVU that was most dangerous in the period. Five of the Mountaineers’ seven first-half shots were on goal, including three near scores in the early goings.
With the win, West Virginia advances to the NCAA tournament’s second-round match Sunday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m., versus No. 1-seed Penn State. It is the fourth-straight season that the Mountaineers have advanced past first round competition.
