MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team used a goal from 40 yards out off the foot of sophomore Andy Wright to defeat Georgetown 1-0 at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.
The win keeps WVU (8-4-1, 4-2-1 BIG EAST) in a tie with UConn atop the BIG EAST conference’s Blue Division after the Huskies defeated Notre Dame 2-1 on Saturday.
The Mountaineers and Hoyas (7-5-0, 3-4-0 BIG EAST) played 90 minutes of extremely physical soccer in which the teams combined for five yellow cards. Georgetown goalkeeper Andrew Keszler was forced to leave play in the 51st minute after a collision with a West Virginia player. Keszler was replaced by Joe Devine for the remainder of the match.
The contest was also very even for much of play as both teams recorded 12 shots. The Mountaineers were able to get four of their shots on goal, while the Hoyas could muster just two.
The difference maker proved to be an electrifying goal by Wright in the 75th minute. The Liverpool, England, native turned to face the goal from 40 yards out and sent a bending shot over the mitts of Devine, who was cheating too far up in the goal box.
Georgetown turned up the pressure in the remaining minutes, desperately trying to get a tying goal, however the Mountaineer back line was up to the challenge and was able to secure their eighth shutout of the season. Every opponent that WVU has beaten this season has been unable to notch a goal in the match.
West Virginia’s win over the Hoyas marks the first since 1996 and is only the second in the 10-game series.
The Mountaineers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, when they face Loyola Marymount at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
