MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior Marisa Kanela scored a goal and added an assist to lead the No. 21 West Virginia University women’s soccer team over ninth-ranked Marquette, 2-0, in BIG EAST action Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (7-3-3, 4-1-1) and the Golden Eagles (11-2-1, 4-2-0) battled scoreless for 47 minutes, but a hustle play by senior Rachael Minnich in the Marquette box ended when WVU was awarded a penalty kick for rough play by the MU goalkeeper. Kanela converted her third penalty kick of the season at the 47:02 mark to give the Mountaineers the game-winner.
Thirty minutes later, Kanela sent a long ball off a free kick toward the head of freshman Krystle Kallman who flicked a pass to a wide open Ashley Banks. Banks easily slipped in her third score of the season, giving the Mountaineers an insurance goal in the 78th minute.
“I have to give this team credit,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “They came out with 90 minutes of intensity and impressed me with how well they played. Everyone gave second efforts all night long. This was an unbelievable effort.”
Goalkeeper Lana Bannerman earned her sixth shutout of the season and 22nd of her career with tonight’s victory. She now stands three shy of the WVU career shutout record held by former goalkeeper Stacey Adams.
With the win, the Mountaineers remain a perfect 6-0-0 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in 2005 and extend their current win streak to four matches.
WVU returns to action with its last home match of the 2005 regular season on Sunday, Oct. 9, when it plays host to South Florida at 1 p.m.
