WASHINGTON, D.C. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team tied the school record for shutouts in a season by tallying its ninth clean sheet of 2005 in a 2-0 win over American on Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
The Mountaineers (9-5-2, 4-3-2 BIG EAST) now have three regular season matches left to break the shutout record that was set both in 1989 and 1998.
After a scoreless first half WVU jumped on the Eagles (3-8-1, 2-2-0 Patriot League) in the 48th minute when Andrew Halsell drilled a goal off of a free kick from just inside midfield. The goal was the second goal of the Quentin, Pa., native’s career. Both of his goals have been off of free kicks.
Just ten minutes later Pat Carroll sent a long pass into the goal box that enticed AU goalkeeper Chris Sedlak to come of his line. The plan backfired as true freshman Alex Yost saw the opportunity to grab the ball and net his first goal of his collegiate career.
West Virginia dominated throughout the match as it out shot the Eagles 14-7. Junior goalkeeper Nick Noble recorded five saves in 90 minutes of work. The shutout was the 23rd of the Damascus, Md., native’s career.
Sedlak allowed both goals for American and made a pair of saves.
The Mountaineers return to action when they host BIG EAST foe Providence on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
