NEWARK, N.J. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team dropped a tough 3-1 decision to Seton Hall Saturday evening on the road in Newark, N.J., on the campus of the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
The Mountaineers (8-5-2, 4-3-1 BIG EAST) dug themselves into an early hole against the Pirates (9-2-2, 4-2-2 BIG EAST) after they allowed SHU’s Justin McGrath to get open on the left wing and tap in his third goal of the season only 4:17 into the match.
WVU rebounded from the deficit fairly quickly as Matt Anstey dished the ball to senior Devon McTavish who hit a one-timer past Pirate goalkeeper Boris Pardo in the 19th minute. The goal marked the second of the season for the Winchester, Va., native.
The half ended with the score 1-1. Seton Hall held a slight advantage in the shot column through 45 minutes of play at 9-8.
McGrath came calling again with the game winner in the 55th minute when he found himself open in the box off of a pass from David Roman to add his fourth goal of the season.
The Mountaineers pushed up their aggressiveness as time dwindled down and allowed Seton Hall’s Sacha Kljestan to take a pass from Michael Zotti and turn it into a breakaway goal for his sixth of the season.
WVU ended with 12 shots in the match, while the Pirates posted 15. Goalkeeper Nick Noble allowed all three goals in 90 minutes of play and recorded four saves. Pardo tallied five saves and one goal allowed for SHU.
The Mountaineers will look to rebound from the loss quickly as they travel to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Oct. 19, to face American at 3 p.m.
