MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team's Blue squad took the first game of the annual Blue-Gold World Series Monday, Oct. 10, defeating the Gold 14-8.
The Blue squad pounded out 23 hits and batted .489 as a team for the game.
Sophomore second baseman Tyler Kuhn went 3-for-6 with three doubles and freshman outfielder Austin Markel went 4-for-5 with a triple to lead the Blue team. Kuhn leads the team now with a .464 batting average for the fall.
“I was very happy to see both teams play so hard today. Our hitters continued to hit the ball very well as they have done all fall,” head coach Greg Van Zant said.
Both teams traded runs until the top of sixth inning when the Blue team scored six runs off of Gold reliever Dan Leatherman to break a 4-4 tie.
In the sixth, Kuhn had an RBI double and senior shortstop Doug Nelms picked up two RBIs with a triple. The inning was then highlighted by senior outfielder Stan Posluszny’s two-run shot over the light pole in left-center field for the Blue team, all before the Gold team could record an out.
Posluszny finished 3-for-5 with his sixth home run of the fall, leading the team, while Nelms went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple.
The Blue team managed one more run in the inning after a basehit by freshman catcher Justin Parks plated teammate Mike Schmidt.
In the bottom of the sixth, Blue reliever Levi Maxwell gave up four runs highlighted by Junior catcher David Carpenter's three run home run over the left field fence for the Gold team. Maxwell would settle down though, retiring 10 of the final 11 hitters he faced to earn the save for the Blue team.
Carpenter finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs, while sophomore outfielder Bill Wooten went 2-for-4 with a home run to help lead the Gold team.
Junior left-hander Brendan Bergerson picked up the win for the Blue squad, giving up eight hits and four runs in five innings of work, while striking out five.
Senior left-handed pitcher Marty Fagler got the loss for the Gold squad. Fagler gave up 10 hits and five runs in five innings on the hill.
Game 2 will be played Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 2:45 p.m. at Mylan Park. Sophomore left-hander Kenny Durst will get the start for the Blue team, while sophomore lefty Matt Yurish will get the nod for the Gold team.
