“We just finished our first week of practice and I am very pleased with the effort this team is giving us,” says Van Zant. “Our guys are working extremely hard. Our pitchers each threw a two-inning, 32-pitch game this past Friday and Saturday, They are scheduled to throw a three-inning, 50-pitch game sometime this mid-week.”
West Virginia has less than two weeks of preseason practice remaining before its season-opening series. The Mountaineers will take the field to begin the 2005 campaign on Feb. 12-13, at Norfolk State for a two-game series.
“We only have 10 more practices before we play Norfolk State,” adds Van Zant. “This makes each and every one of them is important. We have a lot of work to do in a short amount of time.”
West Virginia’s season-opener on Feb. 12 will be the earliest start in school history.
