WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell short in its bid to upset No. 28 William and Mary, 7-0, on Sunday, Jan. 30, in Williamsburg, Va.
William and Mary (3-0) jumped on West Virginia (1-1) early, not allowing the youthful Mountaineers to find any sort of rhythm.
Junior Raynie Theis was competitive in singles play, dropping a tough 4-6, 4-6 decision to the Tribe’s Lingda Yang. Freshman Kathryn Gerber also showed resiliency, winning three games in the second set after falling 6-0 to Amy Wei in the first set of the No. 3 singles match.
“William and Mary proved why they are a top 30 team,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “They came out firing on all cylinders and took the momentum right off the bat. We will learn a lot from this match and use it to improve in our quest for a BIG EAST championship.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Feb. 4, when they travel to Richmond, Va., to play Campbell (8 a.m.) and No. 57 Virginia Commonwealth (noon) in the VCU Invitational.
